I have not talked about prayer in any of my blogs yet, at least I do not think I have. How very strange because prayer to me is like breathing, you cannot live without it. As much as I need air to breathe, I need prayer to fill my soul with the connection to God.
As a whole, this world is all about "connections". We want the best connections, with the fastest service, free roaming and no hidden service charges. We are on our cell phones all the time, connected to wi-fi, connected to our friends, connected to our work, our families. We are such a connected world. Well God has the best communication system going, and it is NOT even new and it is always Free, worldwide roaming and you guessed it, it is hands free.
You can be connected to the God of the universe 24/7 - it is called prayer.
Prayer to me is an ongoing conversation with God. It can be inaudible, that being, quietly in your head, it can be audible, speaking aloud with your voice. Sometimes it has requests, sometimes it has thanks, sometimes it has adoration and sometimes it is really more like me venting.
Often people only pray when they come to the end of themselves and there is no where else to go.
I think of prayer as a "weapon", it is my weapon of choice. The battle field is the world and it will try to beat you down. Life can get so very complicated, confusing and hard.
Prayer is the ultimate weapon because I am not venting to someone who cannot do anything about my problem. I am venting to the only one who can.
Oswald Chambers in his book, My Utmost For His Highest, has some of my favorite quotes on prayer:
1. Get into the habit of saying, “Speak, Lord,” and life will become a romance.
2. We hear it said that a man will suffer in his life is he does not pray; I question it. What will suffer is the life of the Son of God within him, which is nourished not by food but by prayer… Prayer is the way the life of God is nourished.
3. We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there's nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.
My Utmost Favorite:
4. Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.
So I ask you, have you prayed yet today? Give it a try.
