Sniffer Update & Reach FM

I did not get much feed back from many readers about my “olfactory” blog until one reader asked me an important question.

How many essential oil drops in water should they put into the diffuser? Screech, halt went my brain!!! Water diffusers are not strong enough to affect your Olfactory nerves.

The diffuser used in the medical trials and the one I ordered and have are designed to have straight essential oil come out. No water. The nozzle fits directly onto a small essential oil bottle.

I bought my oils from a reputable company- so no solvents or fillers. Health food stores have good brands.

I did find bottle sizes different but a spare empty bottle came with my machine so I simply pour some in and out of that bottle each day from the larger bottles to change up the scent. I am smelling a delightful lemon scent right now.

Hope this helps clarify, private message me if you are still wondering about anything. The picture in last weeks blog was of the retraining olfactory kit for those who lost their smell. It is a different method.

Reach FM Radio

I kept seeing posts on Facebook wondering why Reach FM is gone from the Peace Country.

As a former employee and Sales Manager of the station, I think I can weigh in on this question.

It is not probably not an answer that you may care for but it is the answer.

Why is Reach Fm no longer here? Because we the Christians of the Peace Country let it go.

How you say? What did it have to do with “me”?

A great deal actually. Most of us probably believe that having a Christian radio station is free, it’s our right. Nope, not free and not a right. It costs.

We took for granted that we could always click a button and tune in to Christian music, news, local events. Most of us never thought we would ever have to worry that it might be gone. Just like we think churches will never be gone or other Christian ministries. There is a cost to all of us. They are a business with bills to pay, staff to pay and other expenses.

Here is the really sad part… once a Christian station can not stay viable in an area, the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission) will not ever allow another Christian station to try again. That opportunity is lost forever.

So what happened? Well the quick answer is there was not enough money to pay the way.

When I was out in the community trying to sell Christian air to folks, I learned a shocking but important fact. Very few Christians will invest in Christian agencies or businesses.

The amount of times I tried to get fellow Christian’s to buy ads from the radio only to be told that “ I love the station but …’I can get better prices here’ or ‘it is not my demographic.’”

I have written about the praeto principle before: 80% of effects come from 20% of the causes.

  • Business: 20% of customers generate 80% of revenue; 20% of products yield 80% of profit.

  • Time Management: 20% of your daily tasks deliver 80% of your progress.

  • Software: Fixing 20% of critical bugs eliminates 80% of errors.

When I worked at the station approximately 80% of our clients were not Christians. Interesting that non Christians believed in the power of Christian radio while a majority of Christians did not.

We did have some very loyal Christian partners, and oh we were very blessed by them and we honor them for their dedication and partnership with us. We also had loyal listeners who showed up at events and sometimes brought treats to the station.

Christians have a horrible reputation of being cheap. This is probably not news to you and if it is then probably it is time you know the reputation others have of you. This may not describe you in the slightest but there are some who have given the group a bad name. I have heard so many waitress stories, starting way back with my sister who waitressed for a awhile. At lot of the stories were about the cheap after church crowd. I pray it’s changed.

Sadly Christians are the people group who have been scripturally told to “give it away” and yet we sweat at the thought of actually doing that. It’s as if we do not have a God of the universe who considers gold to be pavement. He is not cheap, He is not stingy. He noticed the plight of the poor widow who offered God her only coin. He sees and watches how we interact with money.

I watched in wonder as I and the sales team worked on commission and had to believe God would be faithful to give us a paycheque.

Those who held their life loosely and believed God would provide did well. Those who held on tightly believing the numbers in their bank over Gods provision did not.

We do this in many areas don’t we? Money being one of them. What if God asks you to do something that does not make sense to you. You can not figure how it will work, what it would look like. OR you know you are not prepared for that challenge… God never asked Abraham about Abraham’s plans for the move to a land God would show him. God knew the details, He also knew He could and would give Abraham what he needed to do the move. Abraham went believing God would show up.

But life lesson… in just a few chapters Abraham lied about his wife. He started to worry about his own skin, his wife Sarah was beautiful and he in his mind he believed and planned his death by the king to get his wife. He had trusted God to take him on the journey but on the journey itself he doubted. Got into quite a little mess.

We all are like that. We love God, we want to try life Gods way but we start doubting and soon questioning.

If you were not a business needing ads, how did the radio station affect you? Radio stations depend on their listeners to show up. To shop at their advertisers and tell them they heard them on air. They needed your attendance at events in the community. They need you to join them at their open houses, and on locations. Numbers matter in advertising are a huge part of how they set goals and prove worth.

You had a part to play in the health of your radio station, but also in other Christian businesses and ministries still going around you.

Now that you know this, you have a responsibility to shop at Christian businesses, regardless of prices, to donate and volunteer at Christian charities and organizations. For you see if we do not support them, they could be gone…forever.

You have Christian radio options. Yes I really miss Reach FM but online provides lots of choice. Reach fm is no more but if you click on the Reach online platform it takes you to a Manitoba Christian station that you can listen too. Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary still have Shine FM stations operating. Sirius radio has a few Christian options on it, but it’s a paid for service.

One that I really love is CIAM, bringing Good News to Canadas people. They are a listener supported group of stations. They have stations throughout Northern BC and Alberta. Here is the link to find a station near you. They have local weather and information. Dawson Crerk is 107.5 and Grande Prairie is 99.9.

These stations need to hear from you, email them, thank them. Show up if they have events.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the people who did support Shine FM and then Reach FM. We could not have done it without you and you helped us spread Good News all over the Peace Country.
