Music is a sound; music, I have discovered, is totally sensory (we feel it with our senses). Music cannot be described but rather it is felt, it stirs up our emotions, our souls and our hearts. It enters our ears and pierces right into our bodies. Music is meant to be experienced not just heard. The notes in music have the ability to transport us to other places, to memories we have hidden in our minds, to people, to things and to moments. Music can break down walls that people do not even know are there.
Historically music is a trendsetter, the leader of the culture, fashion, even thoughts.
Go back in history and you will find that music played a part in wars, it was in kings palaces, music soothed or was used to stir up.
Music is powerful and it is an extremely effective tool to steer people.
I heard a quote the other day from a radio DJ. He claimed that he could take people from zero to happy in about 20 minutes or he could take them the other way to an angry mob in the same amount of time – 20 minutes just by playing songs. That seems like a fairly harmless pastime – playing songs.
But there is a reason trumpets are blown before an army advances; it stirs the hearts of the army, it invigorates, strengthens but perhaps there is even one more reason:
Numbers 10:9-10: "When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies. Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind the Lord your God of His covenant with you. I am the Lord your God."
When the trumpets blow, God will remember.
God hears our music. God created music and the Bible says that there will be music in heaven.
Revelation 14:2,3 “And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps.”
Music is important to God. As I am completing my course on the history of the country of Israel, preparing to embark on a journey to this country, a sermon that I watched has spoken deeply to my heart.
The speaker said that songs can go where preaching cannot. Songs are seeds that go into the spirits of people and often people are not even aware. (Sean Feucht)
He went on to say that now is the time that God is raising up worship leaders, songwriters, musicians and in fact Christian music is going mainstream. Why?
Because God is wanting the sound on the earth to match the sound of heaven.
The Lord’s Prayer: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
There is music in heaven and God wants it to echo down here to establish His authority and rulership of the world.
What is the sound that God hears when He listens to what is covering the earth? I imagine it is a jumble and a half.
Over the middle east the sound of Islam is heard. The call to prayer is done with music and five times a day they call out for their followers to come and pray. Five times a day over the whole of countries and nations of the middle east this sound goes out. It is not a quiet sound – it is harsh unrelenting, commanding, you cannot ignore it. They proclaim what they believe.
When God listens to Christians what does He hear? Perhaps He hears some great music on Sundays or a few days in between, but we have not taken a stand to proclaim to the air and earth that our God reigns each and every day.
“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.” (Psalm 40:3)
God wants our mouth and hearts to praise Him – continually. Songs have the power to Bless the World through our music, God said many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Are we singing?
What song do you have in your heart to sing to God – Sing it! All the time!
Or like me, has your song gotten quiet, hushed by the busy-ness of life, squashed and squeezed out because of disappointments or fear?
My friends – lets ask God to renew our Song for Him and then open our mouths and start filing the air and the earth with our joyful noises! He is listening, and He will remember.
